Cambodian and Indonesian Foreign Ministers Discuss Bilateral Relations

PHNOM PENH: The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, led a high delegation to pay an official visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia from 30 November – 01 December, at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn.

Retno Marsudi met with Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn for an official bilateral meeting, during which both Foreign Ministers expressed they highly valued the long-standing bilateral relations between Cambodia and Indonesia, which have grown in multiple areas including politics, defense and security, trade, human resource development, agriculture, infrastructure, culture, health and tourism and connectivity.

On the subject of defense cooperation, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn expressed his gratitude to Indonesia for the country’s support in providing capacity building and training courses to the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, as well as the bodyguard unit of Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Regarding trade and investment cooperation, both Foreign Ministers agreed to encourage both sides to double efforts in working closely to increase trade volumes. Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn strongly encouraged more Indonesian companies to invest in Cambodia, citing incentives and more favorable conditions for investors under the new investment law.

On the subject of regional and international cooperation, the Foreign Ministers exchanged their views on issues of common interest and expressed their full support for each other in multilateral fora, especially under the ASEAN framework.

Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn expressed his sincere thanks to Indonesia for supporting Cambodia in successfully hosting the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit, and for taking over the ASEAN chairmanship for 2022. The Indonesian Foreign Minister in return also expressed her gratefulness to Cambodia for supporting Indonesia’s Presidency of G-20 in 2022.

Prior to the meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister, Retno Marsudi and her delegation had first paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Hun Sen at the Peace Palace, where they discussed a number of subjects related to bilateral cooperation and ASEAN work. The Indonesian Foreign Minister also applauded Cambodia’s effective control of the Covid-19 pandemic and successful vaccination program which has allowed the country to gradually reopen all socioeconomic activities.
